My friend Donald, Zakao, has been known as “Babu”, grandfather, since he was four years old. In the 1990s its the early 2000s, Babu was known for his stories in Wamba and environs. I recorded a number of his stories Babu’s stories are his inventions. They are stories of life with the Samburu. Babu’s family has lived in Wamba since before Kenya’s 1963 independence from the British. Originally from Meru, at the base of Mt. Kenya, Babu has an outsider-insider’s experience of Samburu life and culture.
I have had the stories I recorded transcribed. One day hope to publish a print edition.
